EXCELLENCE IN MEDICINE: UNITED BULAWAYO HOSPITALS DOCTORS DR. CHITIYO AND DR. MAJOK LEAD ECSACOP GRADUATES

Two exceptional female Zimbabwean doctors, Dr. Enia Chitiyo and Dr. Awar Majok, have made their country proud by graduating at the top of their class from the prestigious four-year internal medicine fellowship at the East, Central and Southern African College of Physicians (ECSACOP). After a rigorous training program based at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, the doctors showcased their expertise during their final OSCE examinations in Mombasa, Kenya, in August 2025.

Dr. Chitiyo and Dr. Majok both began their careers at United Bulawayo Hospitals which is their mother hospital. Dr. Chitiyo completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and Dr. Majok at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). Their paths converged at the United Bulawayo Hospitals, where they honed their skills before embarking on the ECSACOP fellowship—a program designed to address the shortage of specialist physicians in the region.

The ECSACOP fellowship is known for its rigorous, in-service, apprenticeship model, which trains physicians to the highest regional standards. Their intensive four-year training at Mpilo Central Hospital, an accredited ECSACOP site, prepared them for the final examinations. Their hard work paid off spectacularly.

In a remarkable display of academic and clinical excellence, Dr. Chitiyo achieved the highest marks in their final examinations, with Dr. Majok securing a very close second. Their standout performance among their peers from across the region is a testament to their dedication and the high quality of their training. This dual success not only marks a significant personal achievement for both physicians but also highlights the caliber of medical talent being developed within Zimbabwe and the broader ECSA region.

This accomplishment allows Dr. Chitiyo and Dr. Majok to practice independently at a specialist level, equipped with the skills to manage complex, acute, and chronic internal medicine cases. Their success serves as an inspiration to aspiring medical students and a powerful reminder of Zimbabwe’s enduring commitment to medical excellence.
