United Bulawayo Hospitals School of Nursing is passionate about developing and training local nurses, having trained the first group in 1925.


Preliminary Training Student Class

Registered General Nurse Training

United Bulawayo Hospitals School of Nursing offers a three-year basic nursing training program.

  • Intakes: January, May, and September

  • Entry Requirements / Online Recruitment (MoHCC):

    • Applicants must be at least 17 years old

    • Academic Requirements: 5 O-levels including English language and a Science subject, at no more than 2 sittings (no practical subjects)

    • Medical Certificate: Certificate of fitness from a registered medical practitioner


School of Nursing Activities

The School offers the following training programs:

  • Registered General Nurse Training

  • Advanced Orthopaedic Nurse Training

  • Ophthalmic Nurse Training

  • Operating Theatre Nurse Training

  • Total Patient Care

  • 4th Council Assessment

Additionally, the department provides specialist training for postgraduate students seconded from other institutions, including:

  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing

  • Surgery

  • Ophthalmic nursing


Nursing Coverage

  • Staffing: 24 matrons, along with other nursing staff

  • Night Duty: The Night Duty Superintendent supervises the hospital at night, ensuring continuous quality care

The School of Nursing also participates in community and social activities:

  • Career guidance programs

  • Donations to geriatric nursing homes

  • Establishing youth-friendly corners to improve accessibility of ASRH services


Supervision & Practical Training

Students are actively supervised and monitored, with practical placements at:

  • Local clinics

  • District hospitals

This ensures hands-on experience and professional growth in real healthcare settings.
