This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Care of the Newborn and Every Child.” The event brought together hospital staff, external stakeholders, and dignitaries to reinforce UBH’s commitment to patient safety, especially for the most vulnerable age group.
The Clinical Director and Urology Specialist Consultant Mr. T. Mushawarima delivered the opening remarks. He acknowledged the patient as the primary stakeholder underscoring UBH’s patient‑centred philosophy.

These partners provided donations that supported the day’s activities. The programme formally expressed gratitude for their sustained collaboration.
The Provincial Medical Director, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Dr Mafios Siamuchembu graced the event and conveyed appreciation for being part of the commemoration. His presence brought weight to the event.
Dr Chasauka Pediatrician Specialist Consultant & Chairperson and UBH Quality Department Chairperson -Delivered a comprehensive address linking newborn/child care to UBH’s quality‑improvement framework.
We were privileged to have Ms Msauki – The Nutritionist, Matebeleland South Province. She provided a well‑received presentation on nutritional strategies for newborns and children, enhancing the multidisciplinary focus of the day.
kudos to The United Bulawayo Hospitals Quality Department for meticulous planning and execution, ensuring a seamless and impactful event. They came up with Awards Ceremony (Inaugural) First‑ever institutional awards recognizing best departments and individuals. Through Quality Department Trophies and certificates were handed over by Dr Siamuchembu, adding prestige to the accolades.
To put an icing on the cake, there was a Special Testimony of Baby Rachel. Mr. and Mrs. Mhlanga-parents of Baby Rachel, born at 405 g and now affectionately known as the hospital’s “darling.”
The family shared a heart‑warming testimony of the care received.
Three families, including the Mhlangas, were presented with food hampers as a token of appreciation courtesy of Valley Vision.
Much appreciation goes to the Hospital management for strategic leadership and resource allocation that made the commemoration a success.
In Conclusion United Bulawayo Hospitals pledge to continually improve patient safety, with newborns and children remaining at the forefront of priority. Future events will build on the momentum generated on 6 November 2025.
